This course includes a sake tasting webinar led by Toshio Ueno, the only person in the world to hold Master of Sake, Master Sake Sommelier, and WSET Sake Educator diploma. In 2016 he was awarded the industry’s most prestigious title Sake Samurai from Japan Sake & Shochu Makers Association.

This Level 1 Award in Sake is a 4-week, 7 module online learning program with online educator support available during the course. The course modules should be followed in order, but students are free to complete the modules at their own pace during this 4-week window. The course material should take about 6 hours in total to complete, plus revision time. Regular access and participation in the course online activities is essential for this mode of study.

The course prepares the student for WSET qualifications and they are guided by a WSET online educator. Students can contact the educator any time for the duration of the scheduled course, should they have any questions. Each module includes a series of independent activities to help students understand sake production and different styles of sake.

Students are advised to taste a range of sakes during their studies, and a kit with three sakes is available for purchase. Upon registration, students will be advised of additional recommended sakes to taste. Students can post their tasting notes in the Online Classroom for review by the educator.

Online study materials will be sent to the student’s email address between February 15 and February 22, 2021 by the WSET. Students will be automatically registered to take the online exam on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 10AM.

In this course, students will learn:
The basic principles of sake production
The main types and styles of sake
How to serve sake
Factors affecting the flavor of sake
How to describe sake using the WSET Level 1 Systematic Approach to Tasting Sake® (SAT)
