‘A HECK OF A VALUE’ – 92 POINT SPANISH RED FROM
BODEGAS VOLVER IS A DEFINITE CROWD-PLEASER
"Here is a new ‘fantastic value’ Spanish wine – I’m just blown away by the quality of these ‘everyday’ Spanish wines – and this is no exception! Bodega Volver is a highly-regarded joint venture between Jorge Ordoñezand Rafael Cañizares, who is also the winemaker. Whether you call the grape Mourvèdre (as it’s known in France) or Monastrell (as it’s known in Spain), the 2014 Tarima Hill is bursting with plush dark fruit and a subtle minerality. Robert Parker rated it 92 points and called it ‘a heck of a value’. At under $14 a bottle, we couldn’t agree more! This is another crowd-pleaser that won’t break the bank." -Jim Knight, The Wine House (3/17/17)
FROM THE PRODUCER
Producer: Bodegas Volver – D.O. Alicante.
Country: Spain.
Appellation: D.O. Alicante.
Vineyard: Multiple proprietary ungrafted vineyards planted in the unique terroir of the subregion located between the Sierra de Salinas, Sierra de Umbria, and the Sierra de la Sima.
Vine Age: Between 1935 and 1970.
Varietal: 100% ungrafted Monastrell.
Viticulture: Dry farmed, organic goblet trained vines. Cultivated completely by hand, with minimal intervention. Hand harvested.
Soils: Primarily limestone, intermixed with large chunks of pure chalk. The largest marble quarry in Europe is located near our vineyards, testament to the chalky quality of the soils.
Climate: Continental, with some Mediterranean influence. A very unique microclimate that is the result of the convergence of the three above mentioned mountain ranges, combined with the high altitudes, that are unique to this sub-region of Alicante.
Winemaking: The grapes are sorted meticulously at the winery, and fermented in stainless steel open top fermenters by indigenous yeast. The wine is transferred to primarily new French oak Bordelaise and Burgundy barrels and some second use barrels for malolactic fermentation.
Aging: 14 months in primarily new French oak Bordelaise and Burgundy barrels and some second use barrels.
Bottling: Unfined and unfiltered.
Notes: Tarima Hill is a complex, elegant, varietal expression of the most authentic clones of Monastrell in the world.
ABOUT VOLVER
Founded in 2004 by Jorge Ordoñez and Rafael Cañizares, two of those responsible for the international boom of Spanish wine in the 90’s.
When the whole world associated Spanish wines with a small list of Riojas of dubious quality and cheap Jereces, these two visionaries recovered old abandoned vineyards in areas then unknown, such as DO Jumilla. At the same time, Jorge Ordóñez reinvented the business of exporting Spanish wines, creating new types of customers and giving the world the potential of our wines.
The distinctive seal of the winery is the artisan production of native Spanish varieties from very old, less productive vineyards, but which provide more quality in every way.
Currently, Bodegas Volver makes wines under the protection of DO Jumilla, Castilla la Mancha and Alicante.
