FROM THE IMPORTER
A Unique Path Because of his passion for Burgundy, Alex Gambal left the world of real estate to explore this fascinating region with all its complexity. After attending the viticultural school for adults in Beaune, he created Maison Alex Gambal in 1997 with the goal to express character, terroir and purity of each wine. Maison Alex Gambal now produces 60,000
bottles per year which can be found on tables in twenty countries.
A Philosophy of Tradition and Respect Because there are no great wines without high quality grapes, we focus on the vineyard and the work necessary to have the most ripe and healthy grapes. In our winemaking, we let nature express each vintage uniquely, by using indigenous yeasts which are naturally on the grapes. We make our wines following Burgundian tradition - our whites are barrel fermented and both red and white wines are matured on their lies with just one racking prior to bottling. We are pragmatic and passionate in the winery, cellar and vineyards. Our philosophy has been formed by our experience tasting wine and observing nature at work in the vineyards. We treat each wine as a
living product up to its bottling which is done naturally, by gravity, without filtration and following the phases of the moon.
Vinification Our winemaking is practical and is based on Burgundy practices and tradition. That is to say that there are no great wines without great grapes; thus our focus is on the vineyard and the work necessary to harvest the ripest grapes possible. Each growing season is different and we respect what nature gives; we harvest when the grapes are ready (not when it is convenient for us) and use the grapes indigenous yeasts. We understand that wine is as much a living product and is the vine.
White Wine We manually harvest our Chardonnay, and the whole clusters are put in the pneumatic press and are gently pressed for 2-3 hours. The free-run juice is placed in tank overnight for natural sedimentation. The juice is then put in barrel by gravity for fermentation with its natural yeasts. Aging occurs on the lies, without racking for 10-16 months. We rack the wine once just before bottling and bottle by gravity after a light fining (no filtering) by gravity, all the while respecting the phases of the moon and the planets.
Red Wine We manually harvest our Pinot Noir and the grapes are 100% de-stemmed, not crushed, and put in tank for a cold maceration of 5-8 days. After the alcoholic
fermentation of 10-14 days is complete, we gently press the grapes, reassemble the free run and press juice and, by gravity, put the wine in barrel. The malo-lactic fermentation occurs naturally in barrel and wine rests on its fine lies for 10-16 months. We rack the wine once just before bottling and bottle by gravity without fining or filtering, all the while respecting the phases of the moon and the planets.
